Because the materials these things are made from may contain unknown chemicals, or lead, I would advise your aunt to wrap the parts that will touch the cake with plastic wrap, just to be safe. Even if it looks like plastic, depending on where they are made, some plastics also contain lead and other dangerous elements that are used in colorings and finishes. Better safe than sorry.
